for the first time since six feet under and carnivale i really felt that you guys have put spark back into classically amazing television, but now before you even allow it to get a CHANCE in developing, you pull it prematurely! what about the wire huh?! that show didn't have a huge following at first and with time and story development it became a hit! what about rome?! it was the same thing! what about six feet under too! the BEST show to ever be put onto television. why is it that the shows that are the greatest get the axe? please do us all a favor and allow it more time to develop and grow. like good wine, good story telling takes time to develop and show progress in charecters and storyline. please bring this show back. you are killing all of the fans who love your network. people, NOT corporations, bring change. when jericho was cancelled due to the outrage of fans, it was able to get a summer miniseries! please bring this back, or we may have to send canaries, surfboards, and or cincinatti paraphenilia! please, please, please.
this show rocked. but like many things that have depth and require understanding and patience, it was either REALLY LOVED or really disliked. It would be great to see sci-fi or some other channel pick this up but i doubt it... sigh... I was really hoping this would make it, I will watch milch's other works now to see if they are as good. I found it strange and telling that the HBO "stuff" site for JFC did not have anything with the stick logo, either didn't know or didn't care. I will miss them all, but I will watch this series over and over again. As it is, I have watched it entirely 6 times now... there is so much we miss the first five times ;)
An idea. Since HBO says they cancel due to budget overruns, everybody could send them $1, to show that we are paying to see JFC. It's not a lot, sure we can afford it? Instead of showing them a finger, ha ha.
where to start? i'm truly broken by the news of JFC being cancelled...why even start a show if you aren't going to give it a chance... seriously, how many quality shows can HBO cancel prematurely...deadwood, carnivale, rome..etc.
its the last straw for me...this show was fucked from the start...blame david chase for producing the single WORST series finale in television history...blame hbo for thinking that its larger than usual audience would stick around after the terrible sopranos finale to watch an art series...i wish this series could have played out...i have never been so intrigued by t.v....i want to see shauny as jesus, i want to see 9/11/14, i want to see john's father (pretty sure it was the car salesman by the way)....ugh, i'm so upset, i wish there was something more i could do...
Why in Gods green earth would you cancel John from Cincinnati? The story-line was just beginning to take off. Instead you have such drivvle as flight of the Concords, which is the shittiest show I have ever attempted to watch. I used to look forward to John every Sunday with wanton abandon, then of course Entourage. Please air more new shows of John!
Lets also send a strong message of support.... Everyone sends something we all can readily find (for free) that will have a huge impact on HBO as its core to the show and surfing....
We All Send Them Envelopes of SAND! Simple and a yet very powerful message, just like the show !!
No negativity, just that we want to show a positive protest of support for something we all know and love.
Please save JFC. I actually enjoyed this show. Spritual, thoughtful and powerful.TV has so little depth or thought to it. Help me have someting to look forward to on Sundays besides Monday.God bless Cissy Yost!
This is an amazing show. My son and I raced to see it every Sunday. I personally have watched all of the episodes on HBO on Demand many times. Each time I watch, I see or hear something I didn't see or hear previously. Both of my sons enjoyed it and are very disappointed to hear it is cancelled. Big mistake HBO. It made me laugh, it made me think. I am all for anything that can be done to get it back on the air!
This is a letter I sent today to 9 HBO & Time Warner Execs - with copy to Mr. Milch
Dear HBO & Time Warner Executives:
I’m beginning to become concerned for you. If HBO was a patient, I would look at is as if you have been a high-functioning, successful individual who, inexplicably, has developed a nasty set of self-defeating and self-sabotage behaviors which are alienating everyone around you.
First, you hire creative genius David Milch to develop great shows for you. He creates two great shows, Deadwood, and John from Cincinnati. What does HBO do? They cancel both shows with no audience preparation, no notification, and no explanation.
Now, from what I read online (the Internet is HUGE), you have tasked Mr. Milch to follow on with the development of yet another series, this one about 1970’s cops. Also from what I read, Mr. Milch has taken a forward-looking approach to HBO decisions, and is moving to meet his business agreements with you in a gentlemanly and gracious manner. I am sure that any show that Mr. Milch develops will be great, as all of his shows have been, including Deadwood and John from Cincinnati.
I ask you executives with all sincerity - why should any viewer now take the time and effort to tune in to such a new Milch series? I’m sure you can wordsmith a generic, soothing, and bullshit answer for me, but the reality is, you have no good excuse for your past actions which now puts all new HBO series in jeopardy.
HBO has now set up a clear pattern of behavior in the minds of viewers:
1) Have creative genius develop great show 2) Get viewers interested, excited, and hooked 3) Cancel series unceremoniously with no warning
HBO has been 100% predictable in this pattern with both of their Milch shows, so why would anyone think they would not do so again?
Even though the (non-Milch) Soprano’s ending riled many viewers, at least you gave us the courtesy of plenty of warning that the end was going to occur, as well you should with ANY series.
People can forgive disagreeing over a plot line, or even a planned series conclusion, much better than they can forgive a pattern of discourteous, rude, and un-businesslike behavior of unpredictably cancelling great shows.
Yeah, maybe the networks do it, but HBO is supposed to be better than that. (It’s not TV, it’s HBO).
The subscribers’ of HBO are your customers. It is as if suddenly you are not concerned whatsoever with your customer service style. Businesses who lose sight of customer service and alienate their customer base always suffer. We, your current customers, and I echo the sentiments of many, are quite upset with your actions on both Milch shows. Three million viewers and growing, on both shows, and that’s not enough for you?
You built your business on attracting and pleasing customers. Now you are alienating potentially millions of your current customers. Word of mouth is a big force, and we do not have many good things to say about your recent patterns to help you attract new customers.
It would be a shame for the groundbreaking creative and business models of HBO fall prey to whatever is ailing you. God knows you are facing increasing competition from other pay channels, from FX, CW, Fox, and even from the big three networks.
You have a great creative mind in Mr. Milch - but micromanaging his efforts is not the way to go. If you really want to set HBO apart as a great creative business force, with the great asset you have in Mr. Milch, you have to give him free reign. YOU need to listen to HIM, not the other way around! Why did you hire a creative genius, only to circumvent his efforts by over-riding his creative energy? Like I said, self-defeating, self-sabotaging behaviors.
Let him resurrect both Deadwood and John from Cincinnati if he wants, and give him the creative freedom to do the work he does so well. Hell, charge us more, I’m willing to pay more for quality programming! I am also sure that other creative financial support could be developed if you set your corporate mind to it.
You know without a doubt that you have audiences for both Deadwood and John from Cincinnati, an audience base that could be cherished, nurtured, grown, and developed over time. You have chosen twice to circumvent your success with these audiences, apparently choosing instead to seek some ideal audience numbers, demographics, critic’s happiness, profit margins, and other characteristics that may not even exist except in your corporate dreams.
Instead of working where you’re at to build success, you at HBO seem suddenly more interested in starting from scratch again and again. Do you have a case of corporate ADHD or what? I don’t know what your problem is, but I hope you seek some sort of help to heal yourself. As JFC would say “work here HBO” or maybe “see God HBO”.
Failing that change of corporate heart, then perhaps you can at least COMMIT to three seasons of the new program Mr. Milch does develop – and plan to give your viewers at least a seasons notice BEFORE you end any HBO show.
If you don’t do that, I predict a continued decline for HBO, because viewers will just continue to lose faith in the stability of your programming, and choose to view elsewhere rather than subject themselves to the continued frustration and disappointment that you have given us by cancelling Deadwood and John from Cincinnati. We got our eyes on you!
I really miss JFC. I miss it in a way I can't completely explain. Why I want to see more of the run-down Snug Harbor Motel I don't know. All I know is that I miss that place where everything seems to happen. I enjoyed all the characters and it feels like I lost a bunch of friends (badly disturbed friends, but still friends).
Zippy, as long as we're being stupid, give the HBO execs a kiss.
For reasons I do not understand I was really into this show. I looked forward to Sunday nights. I carried around the first episode on my ipod and watched it over and over.
Name three things that are canceled: 1 Deadwood 2 JFC 3 My sub to HBO
John from Cincinnati is the Twin Peaks and X-Files of the 21st Century. HBO had all the makings of a true winner. I.E. A teenage heart throb in Shaunie, surfing, drugs, miracles, Barry the Fairy, Fast Freddie, Valatka, the Yost's wonderfully dysfunctional family, Chandra West as porn star Tina Blake is eye candy for the men folk as Butchie maybe the bad boy for the women and Mitch is one good looking "old man." Do not let this classic drama end...please!!!
HBO, we’ve had our eyes on you for a long time. Expecting you to present brilliant, edgy shows, we have tuned in again and again. You have come through many times, bringing much joy and entertainment to us, your paying customers.
Now our hearts are very heavy. After charming us with the mystical and brilliant John from Cincinnati, with its outstanding cast, you have cancelled the show.
We respectfully ask that HBO reconsider. There are several millions of us, and the audience was growing. We became hooked and entranced with multileveled story line and the great characters.
The message boards, petitions, and websites dedicated to John From Cincinnati tell the story of how this show has touched so many of us, giving us hope, renewed faith in the human potential for good, and a sense that redemption is available for anyone willing to accept it.
We think that a show that can do this deserves your nurture and support, not cancellation.
We don’t want to turn you off HBO, but many of us are ready to do so. As the title song of John From Cincinnati says, “if you’re after getting the honey, then you don’t go killing all the bees”. We are the bees HBO, and the honey for you is our monthly payments.
We respectfully ask that HBO reconsider its decision, and move forward with Season 2 of John From Cincinnati.
Save john because it's the best thing ever on hbo. The best thing ever on television. it takes some attention and an open mind but the rewards are immense It goes to places tv never has dreamy, mythic america. It's about a fallen family surf royalty dethroned by life Amazing performances, breathtaking ocean scenes dialogue that patters with wild intentions John is another world made real by the milch factory Save it and save a real piece of americana circa 2007
